Candidate filing closes for local primary, setting up crowded congressional and county council races

Candidate filing for the Aug. 4 primary election closed Friday, May 8, setting the stage for competitive races across Southwest Washington.

Washington’s Third Congressional District race drew the largest field, with nine candidates filing to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a Democrat seeking a third term. Republican state Sen. John Braun entered the race with an endorsement from President Donald Trump.

The other candidates running for the congressional seat include Brent Hennrich (D), Troy Rasband (D), Austin Braswell (D), John Roco (R), Lawrence Kellogg (R), John  Saulie-Rohman (Independent) and Antony Barran (Cascade Party).

State legislative races

Several incumbent state lawmakers also face primary challengers.

Candidates for the 18th Legislative District Position 1 include incumbent Republican Rep. Stephanie McClintock, who will face Democrat Randi L. Knott for Position 1. 

Incumbent Republican Rep. John Ley faces a challenge from Democrat Deken Letinich for Position 2.

In the 20th Legislative District, incumbent Republican Rep. Peter Abbarno filed for reelection for Position 1 and will face Democrat Andy Zahn. Incumbent Republican Rep. Ed Orcutt filed for Position 2 and will run against Democrat Evan Jones.

County-level races

Several Clark County Council positions also feature multiple candidates.

For Clark County Council Position 1, incumbent Glen Yung will face challengers Dusti Arab, Bryan Shull and Lukas Bardue in the primary election.

In Council District 2, incumbent Michelle Belkot will run against John Zingale and Martin Pittioni.

Clark County Chair Sue Marshall, who represents Council District 5, did not file for reelection. Former Battle Ground mayor and current city council member Troy McCoy and Charter Review commissioner Peter Silliman filed for the open seat.

Clark County Sheriff John Horch filed for reelection and will run unopposed.

Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey’s retirement opened the field to four candidates: Mitchell Kelly, Eileen Quiring O’Brien, Sharon Wylie and Ty Stober.

Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Laurel Smith and Clark County Treasurer Alishia Topper also filed for reelection unopposed.

Two candidates, incumbent Peter Van Nortwick and Tyler Thoune, filed to run for Clark County assessor. Gerald E. Gray and Rachel Shapiro filed to challenge incumbent Scott G. Weber for the Clark County clerk position.

In Cowlitz County, Commissioner District 3 incumbent Richard Dahl, a Republican, will face Democrat Chelsea Chandler.

Troy Brightbill filed unopposed for Cowlitz County sheriff. Current Sheriff Brad Thurman will retire after more than 30 years in law enforcement. Incumbent Cowlitz County Auditor Carolyn Fundingsland filed unopposed.
