Battle Ground ace Elizabeth Peery won the “Pitch, Hit and Run” competition for 11- and 12-year-olds in the softball division on June 23 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. She went to the Seattle competition after first winning in a Portland competition.

Because of the win, Peery was named the champion within the Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska region and she scored high enough to head to Cleveland last week for the national MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition where she placed third overall.

For pitching, contestants are tested on their Strike Zone targeting, much like pitchers in national softball and baseball. For hitting, contestants hit a ball off a stationary tee for distance and accuracy. For running, the contestant is timed starting from second base, touching third then touching home plate. Each category has its own scoring system adding up to the final score.

Next year, Peery will be an eighth-grader at View Ridge Middle School in Ridgefield where she is an honor student and active musician. Despite having Type 1 Diabetes, Peery plans to keep competing and pushing at a high level.

“She strives to be an example to other kids with Type 1, showing them that they can do anything they dream of, and to never let being Type 1 get in their way,” Peery’s mother, Katie, wrote on a GoFundMe page she put together for the trip to Cleveland.
