The City of Battle Ground has announced the first recipient of its new BiG Heart Award, a recognition program honoring residents, organizations and businesses that make meaningful contributions to the community.

Mayor Eric Overholser presented the first BiG Heart Award on April 20 to Virginia Mendez-Rodeman of Battle Ground Martial Arts Academy. Mendez-Rodeman earned the recognition for her achievements in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including a gold medal at the 2026 International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation European Championship in Lisbon, Portugal.

The program invites community members to nominate individuals or groups whose service, achievements or dedication help strengthen the city. One recipient will be selected each month and recognized during a Battle Ground City Council meeting, receiving a commemorative award and certificate, according to a city news release.

Nominees must be Battle Ground residents, local organizations or individuals affiliated with businesses within city limits. City staff and elected officials are not eligible.

More information and nominations are available at cityofbg.org/BiGHeart.
