The community gathered at Prairie Tavern on April 15 to honor Tyler Castle as Battle Ground’s 2024 Citizen of the Year. Castle, a long-time volunteer known for supporting dozens of local nonprofits, was recognized for decades of service throughout Clark County.
Castle learned of the award weeks earlier during his monthly Whipple Creek cleanup event, where the Citizen of the Year committee surprised him with the announcement.
City leaders, local nonprofits and supporters filled Prairie Tavern’s event space. The committee opened the ceremony by thanking the crowd and commending Castle for his dedication.
Kris Swanson, Battle Ground City Manager, spoke about Castle’s energy and said she looks forward to partnering with him on future community projects.
Deputy Mayor Shane Bowman shared his appreciation for Castle’s efforts and said services like his help keep Battle Ground a great place to live.
Battle Ground Police Chief Dennis Flynn highlighted a recent moment of Castle’s impact. With little notice, Castle delivered a full pallet of pies to support the department’s Thanksgiving meal delivery for families in need. Flynn echoed the value of strong community involvement.
Kendra Laratta, a Citizen of the Year committee member, presented Castle with a plaque and invited the crowd to continue the celebration on July 19. That morning, Castle will take part in a rose planting ceremony in Central Park alongside the Royal Rosarians, followed by his appearance in the Battle Ground Harvest Days Parade.
Castle thanked everyone for attending and for continuing to serve the community alongside him.
