The wall

On one coast we have the Statue of Liberty welcoming the tired and the poor and on the southern border we want to build a blockade against the tired and the poor. Do we want that to be our next symbol?

Does it seem so elusive to think about spending that money to help, truly help, those countries of origin so these people can find safety, schooling, clean water, electrical power, and suitable jobs in their own country where they find comfort with their own language and culture? Is there no way to negotiate with the leaders of those countries to improve their rural areas and barrios to attract even a greater economy for the entire country? Is there no way to help those leaders understand the need for improved education and job quality to reduce gang formation and degradation of life in general?

I keep wondering whose pockets are benefitting from the push to build a border wall. I agree there should be improved border security practices but let’s find options that are less invasive to the environment and more helpful to meet the needs of truly desperate people. I have to remind everyone, of course, that in the president’s campaign rhetoric this proposed wall was to be paid for by Mexico. That was not logical and neither is the idea of a solid barrier.
