Those seeking the necessary training to be compliant with Initiative 1639 have two upcoming opportunities to receive free firearms safety training as the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office is offering classes in June and July.

On both June 26 and July 24, the sheriff’s office will be offering classes to Cowlitz County residents only, providing the certificate of firearms safety needed to purchase semiautomatic rifles beginning July 1.

Classes will be hosted at the Rizad Building, 1800 Western Lane, Kelso, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Classes both days will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be about two hours long.

Participants must be at least 21 years old.

Those interested in the classes are asked to register by contacting Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Taylor at (360) 577-3092 or taylorj@co.cowlitz.wa.us. The Sheriff’s Office can also arrange training for groups with 15 or more attendees.
