A hiker from Ohio in the Mount St. Helens area has been found alive after a six-day search, Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office announced Aug. 15

A Wednesday update from the sheriff’s office said a search for Matthew B. Matheny, 40, of Warren, Ohio, was complete following nearly a week of looking.

Matheny was found conscious and was talking with rescuers, according to the sheriff's office. The hiker was airlifted to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver and though he did not appear to suffer any life-threatening injuries a full evaluation at the hospital was pending.

Matheny disappeared early Aug. 9 after leaving to head to Mount St. Helens, the sheriff’s office reported, leaving in a local friend’s Subaru Outback. The friends subsequently filed a missing person report when he did not return.

During the search, sheriff’s deputies have located the vehicle, unoccupied at the Blue Lake trailhead in Cowlitz County. Subsequent investigations using cell phone records and hikers' testimony allowed for a more pinpointed search, the sheriff's office reported Aug. 14.

Matheny was found in the area determined by previous investigation, the sheriff's office announced the next day.
