Education Foundation offers January school shout-outs

Battle Ground Education Foundation (BGEF) highlighted three schools for the month of January.

Tukes Valley Primary, Tukes Valley Middle and Maple Grove staff received a healthy breakfast and a $300 scholarship to support student learning. Each building principal was asked to write a short paragraph highlighting great practices in the school. Below is an excerpt from each school.

“Tukes Valley Primary is a great place to learn,” said Laurie Sunby, principal. “We are focusing on multiple instructional initiatives this year, including Math Best Practices and Best Practices for Literacy Instruction. These initiatives help students develop a deep understanding of math concepts and guide students to become better readers and writers. Our students are also focused on positive behavior expectations through our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiative. We have seen a huge increase in the number of students earning positive Tukes Valley Important Person (TVIP) awards.”



“Tukes Valley Middle School has been supporting student art through a collaboration with Artsonia, an online student art museum,” said Diana Harris, principal. “Our fabulous art teacher, Debbie Supplitt, gets our students excited about art and helps them load their finished pieces onto Tukes’ Artsonia page. Tukes Valley Middle School was recently awarded a ‘CYBER BLUE RIBBON,’ Artsonia’s Leading School award for being the number one rated middle school in Washington state for overall website activity, including artwork, comments, fan clubs and fundraising. “At Maple Grove we strive to provide an environment that is centered on the whole child as reflected in our curriculum that extends beyond core subjects,” said Principal Michelle Reinhardt. “Our K-8 students take advantage of our diverse after-school activities such as tutoring, gardening, floor hockey, drama, arts and crafts, open gym, jazz and drama. As a K-8 campus, students have opportunities to work alongside younger and older students through learning activities, creating opportunities for students to connect with the Maple Grove community. In addition, students participate in two electives throughout the day providing them with additional fine arts and intervention experiences. Our on-going collaboration among staff has contributed greatly to improved instruction in the classroom and has helped us implement a Standards-Based Grading system.”
