Art by Daybreak fourth graders on display at BG Starbucks

Fourth-grade students from Daybreak Primary School in Battle Ground have been able to see their own artwork on display in the Battle Ground Starbucks, located at 11 NW 12th Ave.

Throughout the years, Sharon Foster, a first-grade teacher at Daybreak Primary, has displayed much of her students’ artwork at the area Starbucks. This year, when Starbucks wanted a more complex art project with a holiday theme, Foster decided to ask the first graders fourth-grade buddies to help out.

“Fourth graders work with my first graders each week helping them with reading, math, writing, science and social studies,” Foster said.

During her planning time, Foster was able to visit the fourth-grade classrooms and teach them how to complete the art project. The theme was an ornament with a focus on lines, patterns, texture and symmetry.

“The fourth-grade teachers and I wanted the students to learn more complex designs,” Foster said. “I chose fourth graders because they have better fine-motor skills and the ability to control the pen to produce more complex patterns.”

Two classes of fourth-grade students worked on this art project, a total of 52 students. Some of the art is on display at Starbucks and some is on display in the office at the school. Foster said she worked with people from Starbucks ahead of time to determine where the art would be displayed and what colors would be complimentary. The artwork was then displayed at Starbucks over the weekend of Dec. 14-15.

The two fourth-grade teachers who had students participate in this project were Gina Lemberg and Jean Potter-Openshaw.

“The fourth graders were very excited to be able to have their work on display in the community,” Foster said. “The fourth-grade teachers sent out an email to all of the parents explaining the project and sending a picture of the art on display. The parents were very happy to see their child’s work on display.”
