Battle Ground High School welding students won third place at Lower Columbia College’s (LCC) sixth annual High School Welding Competition, held Feb. 7. First place went to Kelso High School welding students and second place to Sabin Schellenberg Center of Oregon.

Ten teams from Southwest Washington and Oregon participated in the competition and took home prizes donated by more than 20 area businesses. High school teams were made up of three student welders and were accompanied by their instructor.

High school students had to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of welding skills from basic to advanced. Each of the winning teams were presented with a trophy to take back to their schools for display. Last year, Winlock High School took first plae with Battle Ground High School and Kelso High School coming in second and third place.

“Opportunities like the LCC regional welding competition give students an opportunity to test their welding skills and gain exposure to future educational opportunities at Lower Columbia College,” said Thomas Fountain, Kelso High School instructor of agriculture and natural resources.

The competition continues to grow each year and LCC is anticipating even greater participation at next year’s competition slated for February.
