The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra recently announced the beginning of its 21st Annual Young Artists Competition with a call for entries.

Every season, one of the best-attended and most eagerly-anticipated events is the VSO Young Artists Competition and the performances of the three winners with the orchestra at its spring concert. The events celebrate the area’s musical talent.

Students of 18 years of age or under as of Jan. 1 who reside within a 135-mile radius of Vancouver, which includes cities as far north as Seattle, as far south as Eugene, OR, and as far east as Yakima, and are currently studying with a private music instructor are eligible to compete in the categories of piano, strings and brass/woodwinds/percussion.

Following the initial judging of application CD’s by select area musicians, the three top candidates in each category will compete Feb. 8, 2015 in front of an audience at the Washington School for the Deaf in Vancouver for the scholarship prizes of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place.

First place finishers then perform their winning selections with Maestro Brotons and The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at our April 18 & 19, 2015 concerts at Skyview Concert Hall.

Complete information and an application for your young artist are available at www.vancouversymphony.org.  Deadline for all submissions is Jan. 2, 2015.

Every submission must be approved by the VSO office. It is recommended to get the approval of the repertoire early in the preparation process (September/October). No unapproved submissions will be accepted.
