BG, Prairie wrestlers place second at districts

Battle Ground and Prairie each turned in second-place finishes at their respective district wrestling tournaments over the weekend as area wrestlers qualified for regional tournaments to be held Feb. 13-14 in all high school classifications.

Battle Ground finished second at the Class 4A district meet at Camas and Prairie was a close runner-up to Kelso at the 3A meet at Columbia River.

This weekend, the Battle Ground wrestlers will advance to the 4A regional meet at Kent Meridian High School and Prairie will compete in the 3A regionals at Kelso.

Ridgefield, Hockinson and Woodland wrestlers will advance to the 2A regionals at Hudson’s Bay High School and La Center wrestlers will advance to the 1A regionals at Hoquiam.

The regional meet for girls in all classifications will be held at Kelso.

Here’s a look at the results for area wrestlers at district and sub-regional tournaments this past weekend:

Class 4A district

Battle Ground’s depth was the key to the Tigers’ second-place finish at the seven-team district meet held at Camas.

Battle Ground was led by Joseph Harnett and Chris Joner, who each earned second-place finishes. Harnett lost a 16-0 decision to Mountain View’s Brandon Huft in the 113-pound finals and Joner lost by fall to Evergreen’s Isaiah Av in the 120-pound finals.

Battle Ground’s Jason Cole will join Harnett and Joner at regionals. Cole pinned Evergreen’s Austin Henderson to finish third at 126 pounds. The Tigers’ Robert Golumkiewicz earned a 6-4 decision over teammate Adam Smalley for third place at 132 pounds.

Other Tigers headed for regionals are Colton Blake and Jess Valitalo. Blake decisioned Union’s Carlos Simon for third place at 138 and Valitalo pinned Luke Pipkin, of Camas, in the 182-pound match for third place.

Class 3A district

Prairie had five wrestlers claim individual titles at the 3A district meet held at Columbia River High School.

The Falcons’ champions included Tommy Greensky, who won by injury default over teammate Leo Rojas-Losano in the 113-pound finals.

Taken Goodpaster decisioned Kelso’s Josh Helling 18-7 in the 126-pound title match and teammate Kodi Walls earned the 132-pound title with a 4-0 shutout over Kelso’s Tyler Workman.



Prairie’s Ethan Burris edged teammate Miguel Avila-Leal 7-6 in the finals at 160 pounds and Jose Avila-Leal added a title at 195 pounds with a 9-5 decision over Kelso’s Josh Sekne.

Other Falcons headed to regionals are Rivers Greensky (3rd, 106), Anthony Dancel (3rd, 132), Peter Mattson (2nd, 138), Chandler Smith (4th, 138), Andrew Burris (3rd, 145), Connor Wood (4th, 170), Conner Castelberry (3rd, 182), Kody West (2nd, 220) and Wyatt Close (3rd, 285).

Class 2A sub-regional

Woodland finished third, Ridgefield was fourth and Hockinson was sixth at the 2A sub-regional meet held at Washougal.

Woodland had three individual champions to lead its contingent to the regional tournament. Josh Pratt took the title at 126 and teammates Nathan Patterson (145) and Isaac Andersen (285) also added championships.

Other Beavers headed to regionals are Cody Swanson (4th, 106), Kurtis Patterson (2nd, 160), Nathan Cloud (2nd, 182), Jeff Jackson (3rd, 182) and Jared Cloud (2nd, 195).

Ridgefield also had three individual champions. Trevor Newburn followed up on his Clark County title with a first-place finish at 113 pounds. Teammate Josh Sokolowski claimed the title at 160 and Vanae McDaniel was the champ at 170.

Other Spudders advancing to regionals are Taylor Nolan (3rd, 120), Wyatt Gaspar (4th, 120), Miles Bethel (2nd, 138) and Lane Anderson (3rd, 220).

Hockinson had two individual champions – Dale Anderson at 106 and Cameron Loos at 220. The Hawks will also have Joe Davis (2nd, 170) and Harry Foster (3rd, 195) at the regional meet.

Class 1A sub-regional

La Center finished fourth in the team competition. The Wildcats were led by Derick Tolen who claimed the title at 126.

Other Wildcats advancing to regionals were Walker Wright (4th, 126), Jeffrey Mayolo (2nd, 138), Tristan Huss (4th, 145), Robby Hoover (3rd, 170), Hazen Kapp (2nd, 220) and Matthew Lincoln (3rd, 220).

Girls sub-regional

Battle Ground’s Sierra Joner claimed the individual championship at 115 pounds and teammate Sidnee Arcury was fourth at 140.

La Center’s Jasmine Meza was fourth at 115 and teammate Charolette Royal was fourth at 145 for the Wildcats.
