Woodland High School softball is riding a 6-0 record into their first league matchup this week against Columbia River, and much of that early season success is due to the play of junior pitcher Olivia Grey.

Her performance through the lady Beavers’ first three games quickly got state recognition, as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) named her Player of the Week.

Against Evergreen, Prairie and Castle Rock, Grey pitched three shutouts made up of 49 strikeouts.

Woodland’s game against Columbia River is at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 11 at Woodland High School.

Two weeks later, another North County athlete caught the eye of the WIAA, this time on the soccer pitch.

La Center senior   Hunter Leach was named Player of the Week after starting off league play at the end of March with a combined seven assists and three goals against Columbia-White Salmon, King’s Way Christian and Castle Rock.

La Center, 3-1 in league, 4-4 overall, next pays Seton Catholic at home, 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 10.
