BATTLE GROUND – The Battle Ground High School girls basketball team entered the 2015-2016 season with a new coach. Building on the success of last season, Lisa May, looks forward to establishing an era of confident and aggressive play to the Tigers’ program.

May developed a love for both playing and coaching basketball as a high school student in Leo, IN.  A four-sport, award-winning athlete, May received full basketball scholarship to the University of Cincinnati.  She is now among the top 10 all-time blocked shot leaders in the history of the Cincinnati program, and was inducted into the Communiplex Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 for her achievements on the court and in the community with alternative educational programs.

May earned her Bachelor of Science in Education, with certification in Special Education and Elementary Education at UC and Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership from Roosevelt University.

May started teaching while in Cincinnati, and continually worked on developing her coaching skills through local youth leagues winning three conference championships with her eighth grade and C level teams. She has also coached cross country, volleyball, fastpitch softball, football, and more recently she coached two boys tackle rugby teams to first and second place in state competition. Last year, May was a varsity assistant coach for Battle Ground’s boys basketball program.

May has been married to husband Steven for 19 years and is the mother of four. Moving to southwest Washington six years ago, the family feels at home in Battle Ground and she is excited to be a part of a program with such unity, toughness and community. May looks forward to working such a strong coaching staff and determined players.

In addition to coaching, May also teaches special education at Battle Ground High School.

Battle Ground has posted a 1-2 record in its first three games this season, each of which was a non-league contest.  The Tigers lost 69-55 to W.F. West despite 20 points from senior Kylie Smith and 18 points from sophomore Morgan Stradley.

Battle Ground won at Hockinson 46-38 on Dec. 9. Sophomore Grace Russell led the Tigers in that victory with 15 points, coming in the second half. Smith had eight points and 17 rebounds in that game.

Smith had seven points in Battle Ground’s 71-21 loss at Prairie on Friday.

“These girls play hard and we look forward to the intrinsic as well as on court success that hard work brings,’’ May said. “We hope that the community will check out how these boys and girls play ball – they are sure to have fun.”
