Area college athletes reach milestones

Prairie graduate Kristina Owsinski qualified to compete at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in the pole vault.

Owsinski posted a victory-sealing mark of 14 feet, 2 inches at the Mountain Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships for the University of Washington women’s program on Feb. 28 in Seattle.

Among the field of 18 teams, the Huskies finished in sixth place in the overall team standings.

Former Battle Ground standout Andrea Olstead led the Grand Canyon University women’s program to clinch the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships title among the field of eight teams from Feb. 26-28 in Colorado Springs, CO.

In the competition, the sophomore clinched runner-up in the triple jump (39-7.5) and eighth in the long jump (18-3.75)

Hockinson graduate Taylor VanValey secured third-place finishes in the weight throw (51-7) and shot put (43-3.75) at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships for the Northwest Nazarene women’s program from Feb. 20-21 in Nampa, ID.

 

Former Battle Ground standout Serg Ovchinnikov captured All-Northwest Conference second team recognition in men’s basketball, the conference announced on Feb. 24.

For the season, the junior led Lewis & Clark College to finish 16-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play by totaling 21 double-digit scoring efforts and posting averages of 13 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

In one of his most recent appearances, Ovchinnikov delivered a season-high 22 points, three rebounds and one assist in a 67-50 victory at home against Linfield College.

SPOTLIGHT

Battle Ground graduate Jamie Ford completed his freshman season as a guard for the Lower Columbia Community College men’s basketball program (18-12) by producing 21 double-digit scoring performances, 12.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

In his most recent appearance, he had 13 points, one rebound and one steal in a 67-60 loss at Green River College on March 2 in Auburn.

Former Prairie standout Taylor Bussey highlighted 8-0 sweep for the Concordia University of Portland softball program (19-9) of Carroll College (3-13) by blasting a two-run home run and batting 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored on Feb. 28 in Caldwell, ID.

For the season, the sophomore infielder has 23 runs scored, 15 RBIs, seven doubles, two home runs, two triple, one stolen base and a .247 batting average.

Former Ridgefield standout Sam Landerholm collected his second double-digit scoring effort of the season as a forward for Whatcom Community College (6-19) in a 74-63 loss at Olympic College on Feb. 28 in Bremerton.

In the competition, the sophomore delivered 11 points and three rebounds. For the season, he’s compiled 3.7 points per game and 1.1 rebounds per game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jake Belford (Battle Ground, 2012 graduate) concluded his junior season as a forward for Davidson College (24-6) by posting averages of 7.5 points per game and four rebounds per game.

Grant Sitton (Prairie, 2011) finished his junior season as a forward for the University of Victoria (15-5) by contributing four double-digit scoring efforts, 4.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.

In his most recent appearance, he provided seven points and two rebounds in a 92-63 thrashing at home of Trinity Western University on Feb. 14 in Victoria, Canada.

Willie Bratcher (Battle Ground, 2013) contributed a season-high five points, one rebound, one assist and one steal as a guard for Clark College (25-6) in a 78-59 victory against Edmonds Community College (27-6) on March 10 in Kennewick.



For the season, the sophomore has tallied 2.1 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game helping Clark claim the NWAC men’s basketball championship.

James Phillips (Battle Ground, 2014) scored three points as a forward for Concordia University of Portland (25-7) in a 97-78 loss to Cornerstone University (30-5) on March 13 in Point Lookout, MO. For the season, the freshman has averaged 2.2 points per game.

Press Brooks (Prairie, 2013) concluded his sophomore season as a guard for Multnomah University (9-23) by averaging three points, 1.3 assists and 1.1 rebounds per game.

Damien Ford (Battle Ground, 2014 graduate) completed his freshman season as a guard for Lower Columbia Community College (18-12) by totaling 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Callum MacKintosh (Hockinson, 2011) placed fourth with the 400-yard freestyle relay (3 minutes, 10.4 seconds) and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle (48.35 seconds) at the Northwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 13-15 in Corvallis, OR. Among the field of eight teams, the Pirates ended runner-up.

SOFTBALL

Madison Sorensen (Woodland, 2014) has helped George Fox University post a 14-4 overall record so far this season. The freshman pitcher has a 6-1 record with two saves and a 1.91 earned run average. Sorensen has struck out 46 batters in 44 innings while walking just 11 batters.

Grace Middelstadt (Prairie, 2012) batted 1-for-3 with two runs scored as an outfielder for Linfield College (10-4) in a 5-3 loss at home to George Fox University (13-3) on March 7 in McMinnville, Oregon. For the season, the junior has totaled a team-high 10 stolen bases, 13 runs scored, three RBIs, two doubles and a .347 batting average.

Nicole O’Haver (Prairie, 2014) finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored as an infielder for the University of Mary (11-15) in a 13-7 victory against the University of Indianapolis (9-4) on March 10 in Clermont, FL.

For the season, the freshman has tallied 12 runs scored, one RBI, one double and a .304 batting average.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Katie Swanson (Skyview, 2012) contributed seven points, six rebounds two steals and one assist as a starting forward for Northwest Nazarene University (7-20) in a 69-67 loss at Saint Martin’s Univeristy (10-15) on Feb. 26 in Lacey. For the season, the Ridgefield native’s averaged 4.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Lindsay Tompkins (Prairie, 2013) finished 32nd in the mile (5 minutes, 3.79 seconds) and 36th in the 800-meter run (2:23.98) at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships for the University of Portland from Feb. 27-28 in Seattle.

Courtney Potter (Ridgefield, 2014) placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run (5:34.09) and sixth in the 800-meter run (2:42.08) for Whitworth University in a 120-20 triumph in a dual meet at home against Lewis-Clark State College on March 10 in Spokane.

Amanda Blankenship (La Center, 2011) ended 10th in the 800-meter run (2:38.71) and 14th in the 1,500-meter run (5:05.38) at the Five Way Meet for Whitworth University on March 7 in Tacoma, Washington. Among the field of five teams, the Pirates clinched the team title.

Jadyn Gourley (Hockinson, 2012) placed eighth with the 4,000-meter distance medley at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 13:20.64 for Northwest Nazarene University from Feb. 20-21 in Nampa, ID.

Kelly Nigro (Woodland, 2013) competed in three events at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships for Northwest Nazarene University. In the competition, the sophomore collected 14th in the 200-meter dash (26.28 seconds), 15th in the 400-meter dash (1:00.61) and 16th in the 60-meter dash (8.23 seconds).

WRESTLING

Miguel Simon (Battle Ground, 2012) placed sixth at 184 pounds at the NAIA West Regional Championships for Warner Pacific College on Feb. 21 in Havre, MT. In the competition, the junior posted a 1-2 record. Overall, he finished the season with a 10-4 record

Shawn Speer (Battle Ground, 2012) completed his junior season for Pacific University with a 7-11 record between the 141 and 149-pound weight classes.
