Friday Night Lights: Playoff contenders emerge

After suffering its first league loss since 2015, the La Center High School football team shredded Seton Catholic 48-14 on homecoming night to get back in the 1A Trico League playoff race.

“This felt like our most complete game of the year,” said head coach John Lambert. “We’ve struggled with the turnovers all season long and that’s really killed us in quite a few games. And so our emphasis this week was to take care of the football.

“Obviously it helped that it wasn’t pouring down rain, but we held the ball tight. We didn’t make any throws that were ‘try to make something out of nothing’ type of throws,” he added. “That really made a huge difference for us.”

Senior running back Wyatt Dodson rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s a physical runner and he’s fast and he hits the hole hard,” said coach Lambert.

Sophomore quarterback Tom Lambert added 90 rushing yards, three touchdowns and fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Scott.

La Center (2-5, 2-1 in league) heads to White Salmon (4-2, 2-0) Oct. 19 and then returns home to face Castle Rock Oct. 26 in its final league game.

Woodland ready for showdown with Columbia River

Tyler Flanagan racked up five more touchdowns to lead Woodland to a 42-21 homecoming victory against Ridgefield Friday.

Reid Hope caught a touchdown pass from Flanagan and ran in a touchdown for the Beavers. Kenyon Guy also snagged a touchdown pass from Flanagan.

Woodland (6-1) and Columbia River (5-2) battle for second place in the 2A Greater St. Helens League Oct. 19 at Columbia River High School. The Beavers wrap up the season Oct. 26 at home against Mark Morris.
