Prairie High School girls capture title at Surf ‘N Slam tourney

The Prairie High School girls basketball team swept three games to claim the Slam Division championship at the prestigious Surf ‘N Slam Tournament held Dec. 27-30 in San Diego, CA.

In his first season as coach of the Falcons, Brett Johnson guided his team to three straight wins in the tournament. Prairie defeated Mercyhurst, PA 52-45 in its opener and then followed with a 53-50 win over Ballard of Seattle.

In the championship game, Prairie defeated Justin-Sienna of Napa, CA, 53-50. Junior Lindsay Asplund led the way in the title game, scoring 13 points. Sophomore Cherita Daugherty and freshman Grace Prom each added 12 points in the championship game for the Falcons.



In the tournament, Daugherty was named the Most Valuable Player of the Slam Division and senior Nicole Goecke was named to the Slam Division All-tournament team.

Other players participating in the tournament for Prairie were Jozie Tangeman, Robin Cole, Jamie Phares, Emily Peters, Jordan Adams, Natalie Whitesel and Casey Sorenson.
