Homemade – this one characteristic of the menu items offered at Hockinson Cafe in Battle Ground is one of the main reasons customers continue to return, according to owner Lora Rohde.
“Our biscuits are huge and homemade,” Lora said. “They are definitely something unique on our menu.”
In addition to the giant homemade biscuits, Lora said some of the restaurant’s most popular items include their Reuben sandwich, club house sandwich, chicken salad and the spinach omelette. She said the Reuben contains corn beef that is cooked fresh right at the restaurant. Along with the corn beef, the Reuben contains sauerkraut, swiss cheese and special sauce, all on grilled rye bread.
Lora said their quarter-inch thick bacon is also very popular with customers.
“We cut it a quarter-inch thick, so it’s a nice thick piece of bacon,” she said.
Owned by the Rhodes, Rob and Lora, Hockinson Cafe is located at 219 NW 20th Ave., Battle Ground and has been since March 2010. This is currently their only location.
The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, but does offer some early dinner options. Lora said popular dinner choices include steak, grilled salmon, a seafood platter and fish and chips. The Chicken Cordon Bleu, also a popular dinner dish, is hand-breaded. The restaurant also carries vegetarian options such as garden burgers and a variety of salads. Also popular for lunch are the cafe’s burgers, which are all charbroiled, making them, as Lora put it, “extra tasty.”
When it’s time to move from the entree to dessert, Hockinson Cafe has a number of homemade pies, including apple crumb caramel and coconut. Lora said they also offer a variety of sugar-free pies, which are made with Splenda. The entire pie list contains more than 25 different pie flavors, although all the pies on the list are not available all the time.
Hockinson Cafe also carries a few small gift items, including decorative kitchen towels made by Lora’s mother and grandmother and gift cards. A large private group room in the back of the restaurant is available to reserve for large parties.
“We feel very fortunate to have such wonderful customers,” Lora said.
