Friends and family of Vern and Rene Dollar are invited to attend a 50th anniversary celebration to be held in the couple’s honor on Fri., March 21 at Mill Creek Pub in Battle Ground.
Well wishers are encouraged to stop by the event between 3-6 p.m. Mill Creek Pub is located at 1710 SW 9th Ave., in Battle Ground.
The Dollars are members of the Dollar family, credited with helping to start the community that is now known as Dollars Corner. Smith Linn Dollar, known as “SL,’’ and wife Ruth Ellen Dollar are believed to have moved to the area near Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 219th Street in 1917. SL and Ruth, Vern’s grandparents, had nine children.
Family members recall the story that SL Dollar and his wife purchased their land near Dollars Corner for $150 and two cows. They later established a gasoline station on the northeast corner of the intersection. Other businesses were to follow. Family members shared that in the early years of the community that Dollars corner was the northern most point of the route patrolled by Clark County Sheriff’s deputies, who would travel north from Vancouver on Northeast 72nd Avenue and turn around at Dollars Corner and head back south.
Vern Dollar was born in Vancouver in 1943 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. His family was still living near Dollars Corner at the time. Rene Dollar was born in Panama but later moved to Clark County, where she attended Shumway Junior High and Fort Vancouver High School.
The couple met through a mutual friend and were later married in Vancouver on March 21, 1964. Vern and Rene lived at Dollars Corner early in their marriage but then moved to Salmon Creek and now reside on their 15 acres in the Rock Creek area.
Vern and Rene have three children and nine grandchildren. Daughter Molly McCauley lives in Anchorage, AK, with husband Mike and their children are Garret, Miles and Kevin. Daughter Lori lives in Ridgefield with husband Barry and their children are Kale, Cori Jo, and Dylan. Son Mike Dollar lives in Battle Ground (and currently works in North Dakota) with wife Michelle. Their children are Hannah, Jacie and Tommy.
