Hockinson High sophomore serves as page for Sen. Ann Rivers

Xenon Berkeley, a sophomore from Hockinson High School in Brush Prairie, spent a week recently working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Berkeley was one of 15 students who served as Senate pages for the second week of the 2013 legislative session.

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Pages, like Berkeley, are responsible for such tasks as transporting documents between offices as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber in addition to attending page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process.

“I have learned a lot about the legislative process from being around the Capitol this week,” Berkeley said. “Having lunch with Senator Rivers was my favorite part of the week. I learned a lot from her!”

Berkeley was sponsored by 18th District Sen. Ann Rivers, R-La Center.

“The page program offers students like Xenon an opportunity to see behind the scenes of the Legislature,” Rivers said. “It was a pleasure to have him here this week.”

Berkeley enjoys running cross country, playing jazz and pushing himself to achieve as much as he can as a member of the National Honor Society. He is the son of Liz Berkeley of Brush Prairie.
