We’ve added a lil’ homegrown talent

Posted

You might have noticed that our newspaper has been a little prettier over the last six months. That’s thanks in big part to a lil’ homegrown talent we plucked out of Ridgefield.

Mary Broten started interning as an photographer for us late last August and her talents and passion were quickly apparent. And although her photography prowess was impossible to miss, she continually wanted critiques of her work and was/is desperate to learn more.

What’s more, everyone who met her only had nice things to say — a few people in our office even started nagging at me to hire her before someone else did.

That opportunity came early last month when the talented young Ridgefielder agreed to join our staff full time as a photographer and lifestyle writer.

Mary hit the ground running, continuing to build relationships and spot stories that would be of interest to the readers she grew up around.

Here’s a quick Q&A to get to know our newest staff member better:

What’s your favorite quote?

“Happiness is the car not the destination,” by Dakota Wint. I feel like people always forget that there’s beauty along the path, we’re all so caught up on the end goal when the true great moments are on the way.

Where’s an interesting place you traveled recently?

I spent a month living in Ghana, West Africa where I worked as a fourth grade art teacher. The after school dance parties will always be one of my most treasured memories.

What’s your family’s history in Clark County?

My Nana moved here from Kettering, England where she then raised my mom and her two sisters. My Mom and Dad met in cooking class at Columbia River High school.

What hobbies do you have?

I enjoy travel and immersing myself in new cultures from around the world. My days off are usually spent on a long hike with my dog Zorro.

Where’d you graduate high school?

I went to Skyview High School because of their excellent photography program!

I’ve got more good news: if you want to yell at one of us about spelling your kid’s name wrong, you’re in luck. This Friday, March 15, we’re holding an open house here at our office (208 SE 1st St., Battle Ground).

Our whole staff will be hanging out and we’d love to meet and chat with you. There will also be “light refreshments” provided, according to the flyers I picked up at our front desk.
