BGPS board needs to stand against FLASH

Posted

I was appalled when I read the July 18 edition of The Reflector newspaper. It was talking about FLASH, the proposed sex-education curriculum for Battle Ground school district high schools, designed by King County Public Health. According to the article, On July 9 community members including parents and concerned citizens came out in force to speak on the issue — many were against such teachings. Two students spoke in favor of FLASH. One, a soon-to-be senior, is transgende r. The other is a soon-to-be sophomore. The latter stated that the school is separated into three categories: one, the LGBTQ community, two, students who support the LGBTQ community, and three, those who need to be educated about LGBTQ. I personally do not agree with that assessment. I must be one who is uneducated. I had to look up what LGBTQ stands for. It stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer, according to several sites online. Does this sound like something every parent would want their child to be involved with? No. If the LGBTQ community wants to practice their lifestyle behind closed doors they are free to pursue “happiness” as stated in our constitution. They should not be allowed to proselytize our children in our schools through so called “sex education.” I stand with Ken Smith and Doug Sheddy in their opposition to the FLASH curriculum. Superintendent Mark Ross says he appreciated the public input, and is planning to have another meeting about FLASH when school is in session.

However, when it comes to the final decision on what is okay for your children, that final decision is up to the board. Not up to the parents. After all the board knows best, right? I pray they make an honorable, moral decision for our children and next generation’s sake.
