Not surprised by disrespectful youth

The riot at Gaiser Middle School shouldn’t be a surprise. As outrageous and shocking as it was to see teenagers seriously threaten law enforcement officers, it was inevitable. Those students have been taught by example that “morally correct” people can ignore laws, elections and court decisions with which they disagree. Look at the chaos in Portland.

Plato famously said that the two most important things for a society is who teaches the children and what are they being taught. Sadly, many of our young are not learning how to think rationally or deal with reality. The current fascination with socialism shows how well-meaning but uninformed people can cause real damage.

Teachers voluntarily agreed to a legally binding contract but decided they “deserved” more, so they ignored their contract. The courts did not make them strike. It is against the law for them to strike. The union then ignored a judge’s order to go back to work; they somehow don’t live in the same legal world as us. Nobody even pretended that the quality of education would improve.

Combine that elitist attitude with the liberal lies foisted on our kids about gender, guns, race relations and the weather, just to mention a few. While most educators are dedicated to their students, the politics of mandatory union membership keeps the radical activists in charge. We are lurching toward a generation of functional illiterates when it comes to civics, politics and government.
