Reader wants to know how to ‘combat’ growth

Posted

A long time reader and newly acquired friend asked me a question through email and I did my best to respond. The question was,  “Just curious, how does one “combat” rapid growth?” Here was my reply:

Great question.

My knee-jerk response is to stop building apartments and homes.

Do that and our local economy gets hit hard because so many are tied to the building industry.

The building industry is thriving right now which puts money into our business’ pockets.

Maybe if our taxes keep going up, our roads become more congested and our school overpopulated and all our resources are used up, people won’t keep moving here?

But if that happens I won’t want to live here either.

What is your answer?

I had to laugh at his response:

“Wow! I feel like I disturbed a hornet's nest! I was really just being snarky about the use of ‘combat,’ which insinuates a victory at some point. As far as what the answer is, ain't simple, that's for sure.”

It’s funny how a simple question can be read and interpreted in different ways. I guess my mind is focused on what’s happening with growth management, bridges, crowding on our local streets and in the schools.

Many of our state representatives have talked about the issues but there hasn’t been much progress made to resolve any of them.

Do you have a solution or an opinion? I would love to hear it.
