Political Courage: Current politicians should serve in the spirit of Founding Fathers

Editor,

The Constitution is needed more than ever in today’s world.

Our Founding Fathers knew what they were doing. They had studied countless hours, searching through all the governments, and finding the ones that had worked. They learned what had made them failures or successes. Using that information they came together as a Congress and the Constitutional Convention. They wanted this country to last; they gave their all in the cause of freedom and the Constitution.

As we go through our days and years, do we think of what each item written in the Constitution has made the country we live in such a desirable place to live? When you vote, do you ponder about how that one act to voice your choice of your leaders hasn’t always existed? That the Founders belief in the cause of freedom made it all worth the loss, struggle and heartache; their livelihood destroyed, homes burned and family members killed.

Freedom was worth it. The dream of making a better life for the generations to come made it all worth it. Through all the hurt, their vision of what was possible made them believe and know it was the best thing they could have done for the times ahead.

When we elect our representatives, we must compare them to the Founding Fathers. Our Fathers came from many diverse backgrounds, but they all had similar qualities. Faith, integrity, and honor. Faith in what they wrote. Integrity in all their doings. Honor that they could be part of such a great work. Also courage.

They had to have courage to sign The Declaration of Independence, for they were consigning their lives to danger and, if caught, death. We should not let their sacrifice be in vain. If our senators and congressmen now had that much conviction and absolutely represented the Constitution, our modern day would be greater than ever before.
