It’s time to raise the tobacco age to 21

As a young adult cancer survivor headed towards 18 years of remission, I’m committed to saving lives from cancer.

I recently went to Olympia with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network to talk with my lawmakers about making the fight against cancer a priority at the state capitol. I urged them to pass House Bill 1074 to raise the state’s age for tobacco sales to 21. The bill has already passed the House and now it’s time for the Senate to act.

As a cancer survivor and volunteer advocate, I support “Tobacco 21” because it helps protect kids from a lifelong addiction that can cause cancer and even lead to early death. High school is a crucial time when youth become addicted to tobacco and many young teens get tobacco products from their older classmates. In fact, 95 percent of adult smokers become addicted before 21 — and if they are not smoking by that age, they likely never will.

Senator John Braun, please help protect Washington kids and save lives.
