Great schools are the mark of a great community

Posted

As you know, Battle Ground Public Schools has identified the need to replace aging schools, upgrade facilities and fund the construction of a completely new campus.

Given the costs of new construction, this is not a decision that is taken lightly. As taxpayers, we foot the bill for public education. Simply put, this is the single most important use of public monies. Quality schools are associated with lower crime, higher property values and improved local economies.

Schools do not need to be luxurious, but they do need to be adequate. Outside professionals have deemed the schools slated for replacement to be inadequate, and more costly to repair than replace. Given the length of service of a modern school building, and the nominal cost, the price tag is a bargain. We will see a one year increase ($0.99 per $1,000) then actually see a decrease in total taxes.

This is a win-win. Battle Ground gets new school buildings, the community attracts new investment and all for less than we are paying now. I urge you to support our community and vote yes when your ballot comes.
