Dynamic duo: dog teams up with drone to catch fleeing thief in Woodland

Southern California might have Starsky and Hutch but Cowlitz County has a very good boy and a flying robot.

The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office headed south last Friday afternoon to help the Woodland Police Department after a report came in that someone was stealing things at the Walmart in Woodland.

Deputy Brady Spaulding and his K9 Icarus responded. They were joined by a drone, which brought its pilot, Deputy Derek Baker.

The suspect fled into a heavily wooded area through one of Walmart’s fire exits when they arrived.

While Icarus flushed the suspect out of hiding, Baker spotted him via the drone and tracked him through the sky as he ran north. The suspect tried to hide in a barn, but the drone never lost sight of him and he was apprehended.

The Sheriff's Office is passing along a video of the drone chase to the Woodland Police later this week and soon thereafter The Reflector will put it online if it is made available to the public.
