Former Daybreak Primary School ‘lunch buddy’ charged with child rape

A former “lunch buddy” at Daybreak Primary School is facing charges of child rape, a letter from Battle Ground Public Schools announced earlier this month.

On June 11 the district sent out a letter alerting parents that one of its former volunteers was facing rape charges. The letter stated that the Battle Ground Police Department told the district there was “no indication” any of the alleged activity happened on school district property, adding that “as far as we know, this individual, while volunteering at the district, did not have any unsupervised access to any of the students.”

A “lunch buddy” is an adult volunteer who meets with a student weekly to serve as a mentor and role model for the youth, according to Educational Service District 112.

Though the letter did not name the individual, The Reflector was able to corroborate that the suspect was Blake Hoffman, 19, of Battle Ground. BGPS Spokesperson Rita Sanders confirmed that Hoffman was a lunch buddy with the district, but said he had not been a volunteer for the 2018-2019 school year.

According to a probable cause affidavit for Hoffman’s arrest, in December the Issaquah Police Department alerted BGPD of “inappropriate” photos on a minor’s phone allegedly sent by the suspect. Following interviews with the victim and their sibling, investigators determined that both children and Hoffman had been sending photos to each other.

Further interviews of the suspect had Hoffman admit that he had sexual contact with one of the victims, according to the affidavit. It stated the incidents occurred between May and November of 2018. According to the affidavit the victims were 11 and 9 years old at the time of the incidents.

According to court information the charges against Hoffman were filed March 14. Sanders said the district only learned of the case against Hoffman until a week or two before the letter was sent.

Hoffman is scheduled to make an appearance in court June 27, according to the Clark County Clerk’s website.
