Recycle, Renew, Reuse: Learn about science, environment at Second Saturday

Posted

Every second Saturday of the month, children and their families can learn about water conservation, science and the environment by attending Second Saturday activities at Vancouver’s Water Resources Education Center. The next Second Saturday event will be held Feb. 8, 1-3 p.m., at the Water Resources Education Center, located at 4600 SE Columbia Way, Vancouver.

The Water Resources Education Center first started hosting Second Saturday activities in 2005 to provide an ongoing monthly learning event for the community, expand the audience of the Water Resources Center, and to encourage children and families to learn about water, science and the environment. Second Saturday events are free, and children and their families are invited to explore a different topic through hands-on activities, games and stories. Attendees can create bird feeders and other crafts to welcome wildlife into their backyards, learn about the amazing world of bubbles, make a piece of art from reused materials

and more.

The theme for Second Saturday for the month of February is “Love Your Trees.” Trees are special, even those that have lost their leaves for the winter. Children and families can enjoy making various crafts from different parts of a tree. Join the fun and learn more while appreciating trees.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at Second Saturday events. All activities are often hands-on and help youngsters, usually from about ages 3 to 12, learn more about water, the natural environment and the world around them.

The Water Resources Education Center opened its doors in February 1996 and helps teach those of all ages how to better care for and make wise decisions about water. While visiting the facility that overlooks the Columbia River, visitors will find a world of information designed to inspire them to become better stewards of the area’s water resources.

Admission to the Water Resources Center is free. Hours are Mon.-Fri., noon-5 p.m., closed on most major holidays.
