Holiday Shopping: Don’t forget four-legged friends when buying holiday gifts

Posted

As if holiday shoppers didn’t have enough friends and family on their shopping lists already this season, many people also try to remember to get something special for their pets during the holidays.

Numerous area pet stores and farm stores carry plenty of items that can be given to pets as Christmas gifts, including treats, toys, toys with treats inside them, new collars, new leashes, food, water bowls and much more.

Wilco Farm Store in Battle Ground, located at 815 W. Main St., offers a wide variety of pet care and pet products. Whether you are buying a gift for your dog, cat, bird, horse, chicken or other small animals or reptiles, Wilco will likely have something for everyone.

Deb Bonnin, store manager, said Wilco currently has some holiday dog toys available, as well as a full-line of everyday pet toys. Other pet supplies available include collars, leads, tie outs, pet clothing, pet feeders and waterers, pet and grooming care, pet containment, housing and bedding, pet medications and more.

Those who have a pet that actually enjoys being groomed can get them the gift of grooming with a full session at Wilco. During the holidays, purchase a Holiday Spa Package for $15, which is regularly $20. This special is going on until the end of December.

Bonnin said Wilco will also have an ad in the newspaper every week until Christmas that will include several gift ideas for the whole family, including pets. Wilco also offers gift cards for any amount up to $500.

Canine Utopia

For those who have a special dog they’d like to get something for this holiday season, Canine Utopia might just be the place to go to find that special gift. Located at 2309 Main St., Vancouver, Canine Utopia was first opened by Evan Smith and Jason Pickering on June 4, 2011, when they realized there was no place for them to get the products they wanted for their dogs.

“I wanted to shop in stores that look and feel like the pet stores in Portland,” Smith said. “Those didn’t exist in Clark County, so I opened one myself.”

Some items at Canine Utopia that might make good Christmas gifts for those four-legged canine friends include sparkle collars from Bark Boutique, bake-at-home cookies from MaSnacks, fun holiday toys from Planet Dog, smoked bones in a variety of sizes from Happy Tails and more. Smith said they also have a large selection of holiday items starting at less than $5. Beds can also make great presents for dogs and Smith said Canine Utopia has a great selection, but they go fast this time of the year.

According to the Canine Utopia website, toys sold there are designed to be digestible, just in case a pooch gets a little over excited while playing. The beds sold at the store are of the highest-quality products on the market, according to the website. One of the bed lines is made of recycled materials and all come with a warranty. The store also carries an orthopedic crate bed to ensure dogs get nothing but the best when crated.

Treats at Canine Utopia are all made in the U.S., most in the Portland/Seattle area. All treats are made with U.S.-sourced ingredients and most are grain, gluten and GMO free. Coats and clothes are hand selected and most are produced in the U.S., even some in the Northwest. The store has a large selection of Muffinhead coats made in Portland from recycled textiles, making each coat one of a kind.

Collars and leashes come to Canine Utopia from Redmond, Bend, Canada, Beaverton, Eugene and Providence, RI. Chews are all U.S. sourced, antlers are purchased locally from a small Oregon company that buys them from Montana and all bully sticks and smoked bones are made in Kansas and Illinois.

Canine Utopia also offers a natural supplement to get rid of fleas from Vancouver-based Lumino Wellness Advocates or 100 percent organic flea, tick and mosquito repellent and shampoos from Eugene-based Mad About Organics.

Pet food is also a high priority for the staff at Canine Utopia.

“We have strict requirements for our food lines,” Smith said.

All of the pet foods in the store are made from all-natural ingredients and don’t contain by-products or chemical additives. Many of them are wheat, gluten, soy and corn free, and there is also a full line of kosher food.

Smith said they do have specials and sales planned for Canine Utopia. Interested customers should follow them on Facebook to make sure they hear about the latest deals and promotions.

Canine Utopia is open Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sun., noon-5 p.m. Contact the store at (360) 737-7881 or by email at info@k9utopia.com. Visit their website at www.k9utopia.com.
