Alpaca owners, enthusiasts invited to attend Alpacapalooza

Posted

For its sixth year in a row, the Alpaca Association of Western Washington (AAWW) will put on its annual Alpacapalooza event at the Clark County Event Center. The event will be held Friday-Sunday, April 1-3, at the event center, located at 17402 NE Delfel Rd., Ridgefield.

The AAWW is made up of alpaca owners, breeders and enthusiasts who came together as a regional affiliate organization of the international Alpaca Owners Association.

Alpacapalooza aims to highlight the growing alpaca population and industry in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to being held at the Clark County Event Center, the event was staged in Puyallup, but the current site offers a bigger venue with indoor facilities, climate control and other amenities which makes it perfect for alpacas and their handlers.

The public is invited to attend the Alpacapalooza event on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3. Activities and events during those two days will include a halter show, silent auction and happy hour social and herdsire auction.

There is no cost to attend the Alpacapalooza event, but parking at the event is $6. More information on Alpacapalooza can be found at www.alpacawa.org.

AFCNA Fiber Collection at Alpacapalooza 2016

Attendees and guests can drop off alpaca fiber at The Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America (AFCNA) vendor booth, only on Saturday, April 2, during the hours of 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

There is free shipping and they are accepting fiber in boxes one. Must include a member contribution form in every bag of fleece to receive proper credit.

What fiber is AFCNA calling for in 2016?

Skirted, or unskirted, fiber Grade 5 (32 micron), or finer. Depending upon each alpacas unique fiber characteristics, this could come from the blanket, britch, leg or neck areas. Staple length 2 -  6 inches.

While AFCNA does accept unskirted fiber contributions, this does not mean that everything you send will be graded as acceptable for contribution credit.

Farms who choose not to skirt their fleeces should expect to see a larger portion of their contribution rejected for credit.
