Celebrate ‘Hockinson Carnaval 2016’ at this year’s Hockinson Fun Days

Area community members looking for something fun to do this weekend are in luck. Venture to the Hockinson area and participate in activities going on during the annual Hockinson Fun Days, coming up Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4.

The theme of this year’s event is “Hockinson Carnaval 2016” and grand marshal for the annual Hockinson Fun Days parade is Teresa Buckmiller. Julie Atchley, event organizer and member of the Hockinson High School AAA Boosters who put on the annual Fun Days event, said Buckmiller was chosen as this year’s grand marshal because she just retired this past December after working as the head secretary in the Hockinson School District for many years.

Atchley said this year’s Hockinson Fun Days event will be very similar to past years, although they do make slight adjustments to the activities from year to year.

Last year was the first year that the Fun Run at the high school track was held on Friday evening, and Atchley said that will be the case again this year. Typically, the Fun Run is a 5K, but Atchley said that this year they’ve decided to do a series of one-mile races.

“So, there’s going to be a young group one mile, followed by a competitive one mile, followed by a kind of fun, ‘wear-your-costume’ one mile,” Atchley said. “So, that’s one thing that’s a bit different this year.”

As far as the parade and the carnival go, Atchley said those things will remain pretty much the same as previous years. However, after this year’s parade, she said members of the Hockinson School Board will hold a groundbreaking ceremony as construction on the brand new Hockinson Middle School will soon be getting started. School Board members will be in the parade on a float and will then hold the groundbreaking ceremony right after the parade.

Also back for a third year at Hockinson Fun Days will be the Bed Races.

“We’re doing the bed races again, this will be our third annual event,” Atchley said. “The bed races are fun and interesting. We had a few technical problems last year with some of the beds, but I think we have those all worked out this year, so hopefully we’ll have that going a little bit smoother.”

Atchley said that one other small change to this year’s Fun Days event is that event goers will not be able to park at the high school and take a shuttle to the event. Typically, parking is available at the high school, but there will not be this year due to the amount of construction going on in the area. Shuttle rides between the elementary school and the middle school will be available all day on Saturday, so if event goers can’t find parking in town, they can park at the elementary school, 19912 NE 164th St., Brush Prairie, and get a ride down.

Here’s a look at the schedule for the 2016 Hockinson Fun Days celebration:
