Quiring officially wins council chair race

It took until the certification deadline for the new Clark County Council Chair to be decided with current District 4 councilor Eileen Quiring winning the election for the at-large position.

Clark County election results were certified Nov. 27 with Quiring, a Republican, narrowly winning over Eric Holt, a Democrat. Quiring won by 986 votes according to the certified results, or slightly more than half a percentage point.

Initially, Holt had the lead with about 1,200 votes on election night, though subsequent counts would put Quiring ahead and she never lost her lead.

The final results were enough not to trigger a mandatory recount, which would have been the case if two things happened: the vote difference was less than 2,000 (which it was) and the difference in votes was less than half a percentage point (which it was not).

As Quiring currently serves on the council, her District 4 seat will be vacant once she is sworn into the chair position. As per state law, a replacement will be selected out of individuals in that district of the same party as the person leaving. The Clark County Republican Party central committee will nominate three candidates for the position who will then be selected by the other county council members.

The county council chair was the only race not to be decided within the first week following Election Day.
