Battle Ground School District responds to concerns on new health curriculum

Posted

After the Battle Ground school board voted to suspend talks of a new health curriculum, the district sent a response about the elements they planned to use from Family Life And Sexual Health (FLASH), a curriculum designed by King County Public Health.

“Given the sensitive nature of this topic, we recognize that we should have gotten information to our parents and community earlier in the curriculum adoption process,” stated communications manager Rita Sanders.

Battle Ground Public Schools is considering using parts of the FLASH curriculum for its high school classes including reproduction, pregnancy, healthy relationships, coercion and consent, birth control methods and how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. The district was not going to use the sections on sexual orientation or gender identity.

“The district is taking a step back to review curricula options and make sure we find the best fit for our district and community, Sanders wrote. “A committee of teachers and staff will convene in the fall to discuss options. Our goal is to update our high school health curriculum so that it is medically accurate and bring consistency to the materials that we use to teach health in our high schools.”
