Ridgefield organic farmer to speak at documentary screening

Ridgefield organic farmer April Thatcher will speak at the screening of a farming documentary at the Old Liberty Theater Wednesday.

Thatcher runs April Joy Farm, a 24-acre farm near Ridgefield above the Columbia River Slough.

The documentary “Farmers for America” includes farmers from across the United States and is narrated by Mike Rowe, host of shows such as Dirty Jobs and Returning the Favor.

The film looks at the changing face of agriculture in the United States, with an aging population of farmers highlighting a need for fresh blood in the industry.

The film “is the story of an eclectic mix of young people — military veterans, bright-eyed idealists, and multi-generational farmers — who are accepting the virtuous challenge of feeding us all,” an announcement for the screening reads.

Thatcher, who runs a Community Supported Agriculture operation providing organic food for its customers, will be joined by disabled veteran Mickey Willenbring of Dot Ranch in Scio, Oregon, alongside “Farmers for America” director Graham Meriwether, for a panel discussion following the showing.

The doors open at 6 p.m. with free locally-sourced food provided in a reception before the 7 p.m. screening. Tickets for the screening are $10 with drinks available for purchase.
