Portland Police Bureau annual summer camp, for children ages 8-14, Mon.-Fri., June 15-19, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at Centennial High School, 3505 NE 182nd Ave., Gresham, OR. The camp is open to children who live in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas and Clark counties. Each camper receives mentor time with an officer, free lunch and quality sports training, including football/rugby, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, boxing, wrestling, archery, fishing, bowling, golf, martial arts, baseball, hiking, journalism/photography and crazy science instruction. The last day of camp features a celebration with Portland Fire and Rescue, Oregon National Guard, Gresham Fire and Rescue, Mounted Patrol Unit, Mountain Wave Rescue and other agencies. Cost is $35 per child, a reduced rate of $20 is available for families who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program during the school year. Some bus transportation will be available from local schools. Camp is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Humane Society for Southwest Washington Discover Camp, three different weeks for children entering grades 3-6 in the fall of 2015, Mon.-Fri., June 22-26 for children entering grades 3-4; July 13-17 for children entering grades 4-5; and July 27-31 for children entering grades 5-6, all camps 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington, 1100 NE 192nd Ave., Vancouver. Discover Camp offers an in-depth look at a wide variety of careers with animals. From doctors and trainers to farmers and law enforcement, campers will learn about animals big and small from the professionals who work with them. Camp Invention, coming to two different Vancouver locations this summer, for students entering grades 1-6, Mon.-Fri., July 6-10, at Salmon Creek Elementary, 1601 NE 129th St., Vancouver, and Mon.-Fri., July 27-31, at Columbia Valley Elementary, 17500 SE Sequoia Circle, Vancouver. This year’s camp curriculum is called “Illuminate” and was inspired by some of the nation’s most brilliant minds, including experienced educators and more. The Gardner School, various camps for children ages 3 and older, camps run for one week starting on June 22 and continue throughout the summer, with the last one being Aug. 17-21, most beginning at 9 a.m. at the school, 16413 NE 50th Ave., Vancouver. This class utilizes the Strength Speed Training Curriculum (SST). The model is designed to optimize athletic performance, reduce the potential for injury, improve core strength and balance, increase explosive power, and enhance agility and speed. OMSI Camps, The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) offers numerous summer camps for youth of all ages. Currently, more than 200 OMSI summer camps and classes are available for registration. Camps range from Camp Hancock, which OMSI has owned and operated in Fossil, OR, for more than 60 years, to two different locations at the coast, in addition to camps in Banff National Park, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Three Sisters and more. Classes and camps cover a wide variety of science topics from building bridges to bringing stories to life through animation, showing younger audiences the science of kitchen chemistry and even a space academy. Nature Nuts Summer Camp, for children entering grades 1-3, Mon.-Fri., July 27-31, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. daily, at Columbia Springs, 12208 SE Evergreen Highway, Vancouver. Cost is $139 per camper. Students will practice proper vocal warm-ups and technique, and learn musical games designed to increase their comfort level when singing in front of others. An original song will also be created based on contributions from camp participants.
