Area pumpkin patches, farms offer seasonal activities

Although Halloween is still about a month away, several area farms and pumpkin patches opened up to the public for the entire month of October and are offering numerous traditional seasonal activities such as pumpkins to pick or purchase, hay rides, corn mazes, tasty fall treats and more.

Here is a list of several area farms/pumpkin patches that recently opened up for the month of October:

Pumpkin Lane at Pomeroy Living History Farm

Pumpkin Lane returns to the Pomeroy Living History Farm again this year, opening Sat., Oct. 6. The Pumpkin Lane is open every weekend in October, Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 3-11, which includes a hay ride to the pumpkin patch, tours of the Historic Log House, animal petting, a hay bale maze, the pumpkin flume and various other games and activities. Children under the age of 2 are free. Historic Log House tours will be Saturdays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Pumpkins are an additional fee starting at $1, except for babies (under 1 year) whose first pumpkin is free. The Farm Cafe will be open and will offer seasonal fare of sausage dogs, hot dogs, baked potatoes, hot and cold drinks, snacks and pumpkin pie.

Pumpkin Patch at Bi-Zi Farms

The Bi-Zi Farms’ Pumpkin Patch opened to the public the weekend of Sept. 29 and 30, and will be open to the public every weekend in October, Fridays, 2-5:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Admission is $8 per person, children under the age of 2 are free. Admission to the pumpkin patch includes one free pumpkin (any size you can carry), admission to the corn maze, admission to the farm animals and free children’s activities such as covered bale maze, corn crib, bale pyramid, pedal tractor driving and calf roping station (new this year). There is also live music Friday afternoons and all day Saturdays and Sundays, one free hot drink per admission (coffee, spiced cider or hot chocolate), wagon ride to and from the field, corn shelling and grinding station and free apple cider sample. Also available at the pumpkin patch are pony rides, face painting, food and drink and free kettle corn and caramel corn.

Pumpkin Patch at Velvet Acres Gardens



Visit the Pumpkin Patch at Velvet Acres Gardens during the month of October, Mon.-Fri., 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m., closed Sundays, open the last Sunday in October, 1-5 p.m. Cost for the pumpkin patch is $5 per person and admission includes pumpkin patch hay ride and any pumpkin up to 10 pounds, petting zoo and hay tunnel. There are also antique tractors to look at and corn stalks, tassles and straw bales available for purchase. The farm has a variety of pumpkins in all shapes, sizes and colors, including decorative pumpkins, Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins, sugar pumpkins for baking and more,

The Patch in Woodland

Visit The Patch in Woodland for more than 40 varieties of pumpkins (large and small), squash and gourds, corn stalks, corn, hay and more. The Patch opened up to the public Oct. 1 and is open seven days a week until Oct. 31, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. There are no parking or admission fees, pumpkins, gourds, corn and other items do cost money. A variety of activities are available to people who visit The Patch, including a “photo-op” prop board, hay maze, pumpkin sling shot and hay rides. Pumpkin sling shot and weather-permitting hay rides offered on weekends only. The pumpkin sling shot costs $1 for three shots and the hay ride is $1 per person, children under 2 are free and the covered hay maze is also free. Concessions are available for purchase on weekends, Fri., 1-5 p.m. and Sat.-Sun., 9 a.m.-6 p.m. All proceeds go to Global Identity Transformation.

La Center Farms Pumpkin Patch

Pick and wash a pumpkin with an old-fashioned hand pump at the La Center Farms Pumpkin Patch. The farm is open weekends in October, Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Admission to the pumpkin patch is free. Shoot at the potato gun range, run through the tree maze and play on hay bales. The 27-acre farm also has lots of parking. Also at La Center Farms, Frightland is offered the last three Friday and Saturday nights in October, 7-9 p.m.
