Hockinson, Ridgefield earn firsts at Clark College Jazz Festival

Jazz bands from Hockinson and Ridgefield high schools each earned first-place finishes at the annual Clark College Jazz Festival Jan. 29-30.

Hockinson, directed by Corey McEnry, placed first in the Class 2A division and Ridgefield, directed by Phillip Scamaham, took the top spot in the Class 1A division.

This year’s event was the 53rd annual Clark College Jazz Festival, which is promoted as the oldest, continuously running festival of its type in the west. The festival included 18 middle school bands that performed on Jan. 29, 22 1A and 2A bands that performed on Jan. 30 and 25 3A and 4A bands that also performed on Jan. 30.

The Dale Beacock Memorial Sweepstakes trophy was awarded to Mountain View High School.

Middle school ensemble finals

1st place – Beaumont Middle School, Portland

2nd place – Hamilton Middle School, Seattle

3rd place – Washington Middle School, Seattle

Special recognition went to Jane Addams Middle School for being asked to perform in the evening finals.

Among those presented with an Outstanding Middle School Jazz Musician certificates were: Luke Fosdick, Covington Middle School; Evan Siegel, Vancouver School of Arts; Madelyn Breaux, Tukes Valley Middle School; Brett Boyd, Tukes Valley Middle School; Rebecca Morris, Chief Umtuch;.

1A and 2A ensemble finals

1A Division:          

1st place – Ridgefield High School

2nd place – Woodland High School

3rd place – Creswell High School

Among those receiving Outstanding high school musician awards for the 1A Division was Micah Ritchie, Ridgefield Jazz I.



2A Division:       

1st place – Hockinson High School

2nd place – Sammamish High School

3rd place – Washougal High School

Among those receiving Outstanding high school musician awards for the 2A Division were Caidin Cheney, Hockinson High School and Josh Gonzales, Hockinson High School.

3A and 4A ensemble finals

3A Division:     

1st place – Roosevelt High School Jazz II

2nd place – Meadowdale High School

3rd place – Mead High School

Among those receiving outstanding high school musician awards for the 3A Division was Ainslie Cromar, Battle Ground High School Jazz I.

4A Division: 

1st place – Roosevelt High School Jazz I

2nd place – Mountain View High School

3rd place – West Salem High School

Outstanding high school musician awards for the 4A Division were presented to:

Steven Montecucco, Battle Ground High School Advanced; Nickolas Schell, Battle Ground High School Advanced.
