Three Battle Ground Police officers received lifesaving medals for their on-duty efforts, the city announced earlier this month.

Battle Ground Police Sgt. Josh Runnels, and officers Kyle Kinnan and Ed Michael each received the department’s Life Saving Medal following two recent incidents.

In October, Runnels and Kinnan were on duty when they were dispatched to a medical assistance call — Kinnan was first to arrive where he found a 19-year-old man unresponsive and seemingly not breathing.

Kinnan determined he needed to administer Narcan, a medication that can counteract opioid overdoses. He administered chest compressions until Runnels arrived, taking over hands-only CPR while Kinnan administered a second dose of Narcan.

Clark County Fire District 3 personnel arrived on-scene and used an AED to resuscitate the patient, after which he regained consciousness and was taken to the hospital.

In February 2019 officer Michael received a call for AED assistance following reports that a man had collapsed while jogging along State Route 503. When Michael arrived he noted people had gathered around the patient including off-duty Washington State Patrol Sergeant Stephen Robley who was performing CPR.

Michael administered the AED after which Robley continued CPR and the patient’s pulse was restored. FD3 personnel arrived on scene and took over CPR before the patient was transferred to the hospital.

The patient, William Maxwell, survived and he appeared at the April 1 Battle Ground City Council meeting to thank Michael and Robley.
