Area residents will have an opportunity to purchase quality books at the annual Friends of the of the Battle Ground Community Library Spring Book Sale later this month.

“The Friends of the Battle Ground Community Library (Friends) is offering a Spring Book Sale just in time for Spring Break’s mini-vacations or home-bound kids wondering what to do,” said Donna Dill, chairman of the event.

The one-day sale will be at the Battle Ground Community Library from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sat., March 21. Although used, many of the books are top quality. The price is $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks.

Among the genres at all Friends’ book sales are novels, cookbooks, gardening, childrens’ books, and often “coffee table” books. Books are sorted by topic and displayed on tables that are accessible to wheelchairs. All books have been previously owned and donated by the community.

Included in the sale are other media such as books on tape, DVDs, CDs, VCR tapes at 50 cents to $1.  Friends’ T-shirts and tote bags sturdy enough for books will be on hand at $10 each.

“Pre-paid ‘gift cards’ are especially helpful for kids who purchase books in the ‘Ben’s Books’ used book store located in the library,” said Sara Striker, Friends president.

These “punch-type” cards in $5 and $10 denominations will be available at the sale.

“Many parents prefer having their children carry prepaid cards rather than cash,” Striker added.

Proceeds from the sale will be used by the Friends to enhance programs at the library over and above taxpayer dollar provisions.

“One of the recent purchases was a movie license for showing full-length feature films on selected Friday nights and matinees at the library,” said Kim McNally, Battle Ground community librarian.

Other support has been the purchase of books for the tween discussion group, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read), and funding for the children’s summer reading program. The Friends often provide refreshments for the public at library events.

“Volunteers at the sale are always needed, especially those who are able to lift boxes of books,” urged Anna Cross, who has been a volunteer at Friends’ book sales for decades.
