It’s ‘Once Upon a Time’ in Hockinson

The annual Hockinson Fun Days community celebration will be condensed into two days this year, filling Fri.-Sat., May 29-30 with a plethora of activities for area residents to participate in.

The theme for this year’s event is “Once Upon a Time’’ and the grand marshal for the annual Hockinson Fun Days parade is Donavon Mattern, who retired earlier this year from Fire District 3 after serving for 38 years in the fire service in Clark County.

In the past, Hockinson Fun Days has been a weekend event, but organizers elected to center the annual celebration around two days this year.

“We are trying something a little different,’’ said event organizer Julie Atchley, of the Hockinson High School AAA Boosters. “We’ve had the Fun Run on Sunday morning in the past and last year we didn’t have it at all. This year, we’re going to try a twilight run on Friday night.’’

Hockinson Fun Days organizers have also added a Star Gazing Party on Friday night as well. There will be no events on Sunday this year.

“We added stargazing on Friday evening,’’ Atchley said. “A couple of our teachers from the middle school are involved with a local astronomy group and they are going to come out with some telescopes for a stargazing event.’’

This year will be the second year for the Fun Days Bed Race, which proved to be a hit last year.

“The Bed Race was a new event for us last year and it was well received,’’ Atchley said. “It’s pretty fun. It didn’t go completely without some kinks, but if we continue to make it an event every year hopefully it will go even better.’’

A highlight of Saturday’s Carnival will be the presence of ponies, courtesy of Short Acres Farm.

“The ponies will be available for petting and pictures,’’ Atchley said.

Parking is available throughout Saturday’s events at Hockinson High School and a shuttle is available to other events.
