Harvest Days, the hot place to be

BATTLE GROUND – Battle Ground’s annual Harvest Days festival ran July 16-18 and drew an enthusiastic audience to a wide range of events.

The festival opened on Thursday evening with carnival rides, filled the streets on Friday night with car buffs and spectators alike for the popular Car Cruise along with a beer garden and concert, and throngs braved temperatures well past the 90 degree mark on Saturday for the Fred Meyer Grand Parade.

Downtown Battle Ground’s Main Street and the Community Center bustled on Saturday with a scooter competition in the skate park, an art show and wine tasting in the Battle Ground Community Center, and a carnival, food court, and vendor booths in the park.

The main stage featured performances from noon until 11 p.m., finishing with a concert by country music performer James Otto.

The skate park was ringed with lanky boys wearing sticker-adorned helmets and a scooter or skateboard in hand. The scooter competition was a first for Harvest Days, and drew a rapt audience. When competitor Dan Barrett of southeast Portland stepped up for his ride, his name was heard whispered with reverence among young fans. Barrett was at the competition as a representative of Phoenix Pro scooters, and leading a squad of youth riders.

Corinne Jhaveri and Laura Jhaveri, both of Ridgefield, brought their Killa Bites cake “bombs,” setting up a festival booth for the first time and offering samples of their treats. Another festival “first timer” was Nellie’s Food Cart of Vancouver in their distinctive bright red double decker bus, offering coffee drinks and pulled pork sandwiches, among other menu choices.

Members of the Battle Ground Art Alliance filled the hallway of the community center with a riot of color. Paintings, photography, and recycled art was offered for sale, and artists were on hand to talk with visitors. In the event room next door, local wineries, distilleries, and meaderies were offering samples.

A kickball tournament and a GeoCoin Challenge rounded out the weekend.
