Clark County law enforcement stepped up policing school zones across the county for the first week of school in much of the area leading to 10 arrests and a handful of citations last week.

Battle Ground, La Center, Ridgefield, Vancouver, and Washougal Police Departments along with Washington State Patrol joined forces to focus on school zones and pedestrian safety, a release from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission said. The increased enforcement was funded through the commission’s program Target Zero.

In total, more than 250 citizens were contacted during the emphasis that focused on speeding, distracted driving and pedestrian safety. Eight citations were issued and 113 warnings were given.

Both the La Center and Ridgefield school districts had a full four days of school given the Labor Day holiday — Vancouver started Wednesday and Washougal started Friday. As of press time, Battle Ground Public Schools had yet to resume classes due to an ongoing teacher strike.
