Remove studded tires before April

Posted

Washington state drivers have until the start of April to change out their studded tires, the Washington State Department of Transportation reminded drivers last week.

State law requires all drivers to remove their studded tires by the end of the day March 31. Beginning at midnight April 1 those driving with studded tires will incur a $136 fine.

The release notes that studs on tires can be damaging to roadways. Tire removal services can get crowded near the removal deadline, so motorists are asked to plan accordingly.

WSDOT is not extending the studded tire removal deadline this year, the release states. Both Washington and Oregon have the same removal deadline. Though other states may have later dates, Washington law applies to all drivers in the state including visitors — no personal exemptions will be issued.
