The Ridgefield School District announced it has its first National Merit Scholar in 16 years last week as Ridgefield High School student Ian Abrams has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship program.
The school district’s last winner of the award was in 2002 — Abrams the is the 12th in district history to make it to the semifinals, according to the district.
The honor came as a surprise to Abrams.
“They were supposed to send a message to the school but somehow that got lost in the mail or something. I found out by reading it in the Seattle Times,” Abrams said in a statement.
Only 1 percent of high school juniors taking the national PSAT exam qualify to be named National Merit Semifinalists. The district noted that Abrams maintains a 4.0 grade-point average while also volunteering as a peer tutor for the high school’s Spudder Academy twice a week. He is also an Eagle Scout and captain of the high school’s varsity cross country team.
“Ridgefield High School and the Ridgefield School District proudly congratulates Ian Abrams on this remarkable achievement,” the district said in a statement.
