‘We’re retired but not tired of music’

On March 25 the Clark County choir group “Reprise” will debut under the instruction of Janet Reiter and April Duvic, both longtime pillars of Clark County’s music scene.

Reprise is a product of a group Reiter and Duvic started when they were teachers at Clark College.

Clark College Chorale, which ran from 2007-2013, was made up of both students and community members.

The idea to involve the community was born of experiences they both had with parents of students continually asking about, and wishing for, a choir group they themselves could join.

“(There are) not enough places for accomplished choir singers to go,” Duvic said.

As co-directors they realized how well they worked together, drawing “upon each other’s musical strengths in the areas of repertoire selections, rehearsal techniques, and producing successful and meaningful concerts,” as they describe it.

After retirement, they continued to see the need — experienced singers who were out of school and not involved in a church choir having no place to sing or wanting more. Thus the idea for Reprise was born and will become a reality next week.

“We’re retired but not tired of music,” Duvic said.

After lives dedicated to creating and spreading music to all who would sing or listen, the two have not lost their passion in retirement. Duvic talked about the effect singing as a group has as people’s hearts come together and for a short time, nothing else matters.

Both instructors, who’ve been friends for over 20 years, started singing in church when they were children before growing up to become music teachers.

“People who sing together … there’s a sense of community,” Duvic said.

“Music is something you can do until your last breath,” Reiter added.

Reiter and Duvic aren’t just focused on what the performers will get out of the event. Duvic also talked about the importance of taking part in the arts of Clark County and, based on the music and lyrics chosen, how they’re confident those who choose to attend will be uplifted by the music.

The name, Reprise, is a nod to two separate directions. In musical terms, it’s a reference to a repeating passage. In addition, in its French origin, the word simply means to “take up again” they explained, which is a reference to Reiter and Duvic reuniting with the same goal they had when they started Clark College Chorale a decade ago.

Like their Clark College groups, Reprise ranges in age  from mid-20s to others in their 70s  and is made up mostly of previous students, some of which they’ve known as far back as the 1980s.
