Eight projects lined up for Remodeled Homes Tour

Local remodeling work including several whole-house renovations as well as a look at accessory dwelling unit living are what’s in store for the 2018 Columbia Credit Union Remodeled Homes Tour.

Beginning Saturday, those looking to check out remodeling work in Clark County will have a chance to tour eight houses in the area which have received extensive renovation work or in the case of one project, the construction of an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) intended to keep loved ones closer to home.

A roster of eight homes is one of the largest the event has ever had. The event is put on by the Building Industry Association of Clark County, with association event director Danielle Kilian saying the last time it had eight homes was in 2013.

The bevy of remodeling projects on display was a result of enough homeowners willing to open up their completed projects to the public and remodelers being particularly proud of the work in those homes, Kilian explained. Mainstays like A.C.T. Builders, Scherer Enterprizes and Battle Ground-based ReNew Creations make their return while newcomers to the event will show off fresh talent in local renovations.

ReNew Creations has two homes in this year’s event, both noteworthy in how they started. One home began with the owners looking to replace a deck. But after starting with one small area of focus, it quickly turned into a whole remodel of the house.

The other project by ReNew Creations is more of a remodel of the whole property than a part of

the existing house. A 510 square-foot ADU was built to accommodate a retiring client for whom downsizing also meant being closer to family.

Other projects from Vancouver-based builders include an updated kitchen and bath and several featuring whole-house remodels. All companies featured in the tour are members of Remodelers of Clark County, a council within the BIA of Clark County.

Kilian said that the Remodeled Homes Tour provides a hands-on experience for those entertaining their own remodels, rather than simply flipping through a magazine or looking up ideas on Pinterest.

“It’s a great way to touch and feel a real project and talk to the expert right there,” Kilian said. “In person is always more valuable as an experience in seeing what you can do in your own home.”

Here are more details on the two homes designed by Battle Ground-based ReNew Creations.

Retiring client has an ADU to come home to

For those wondering what they will do when they retire, the answer might be an accessory dwelling unit — a second dwelling on the same property as a primary home. It was the solution for one homeowner.

The result was creating 510-square-feet of luxury living. It includes a modified kitchen with white Shaker cabinets and an island sporting the homeowner’s favorite color — aqua or “Tiffany” blue.  The island doubles as eating and desk space, giving this home a petite-sized pop.

Its open concept allows the living room to ease into the kitchen and even the bedroom to take advantage of every inch. Privacy was also accounted for with pocket doors to wall off the bedroom, giving the homeowner options on how to use the space when alone or entertaining.

Care was taken to incorporate a livable bathroom space with walk-in shower and includes a stackable washer and dryer.

Since space inside was at a premium, the ADU gets double duty from its outside living space including both a patio and carport making this ADU something that adds to both the primary residence and to the family members living there.

Deck replacement leads to whole home remodel

The call came in — a homeowner had a deteriorating deck that needed to be replaced for safety’s sake. ReNew Creations met the homeowners and evaluated the deck. At a follow-up meeting, they discussed the budget and ReNew was promptly hired to fix the deck. Before leaving the meeting, the homeowner expressed her dislike for the carpeting that ran throughout her home and wondered what other updating ReNew Creations could do. Soon it was determined that the entire home should be remodeled with a contemporary feel.

Does this always happen? No. Occasionally? Yes.

The deck was completed and planning, design, and budgeting for the remodel began.

Carpeting was replaced by Luxury Vinyl Plank and the entire home was painted. The barrel ceiling in the dining room was paneled and metal handrails were installed along with new surrounds for two fireplaces. The kitchen received new appliances, plumbing, and lighting fixtures and quartz countertops and the laundry room received similar treatment.
