Winter activities for seniors

Battle Ground Parks and Recreation releases a quarterly newsletter highlighting different opportunities specifically catered toward seniors. Activities are open to any senior who wants to participate, with most activities offered on an ongoing basis. 

Where to eat

The Mad Hatters Club meets on the second Friday of each month. There are no membership fees or red hats required. The only requirement is that you join us when you can and have some fun.

Lunch at Keo Thai

Keo Thai Cuisine brings the exotic flavors of the orient in authentic Thai dishes. Patrons can select mild to spicy dishes featuring curry, soba noodles, peanut and oyster sauces.

Keo Thai is located in the Gardner Center, near the Battle Ground Cinema (1700 SW 9th Ave., Battle Ground) The Mad Hatter meals are “Dutch” style with each attendant paying for their own meal.

Senior Potluck Day

Date: Second Monday of each month 

Time: Doors open at 10 a.m.; lunch served at noon 

Location: Battle Ground Senior Center, 116 NE 3rd Ave.

Suggested Donation: $1 per person

The Battle Ground Senior Citizens group hosts a monthly Senior Potluck, allowing seniors to meet new friends and enjoy a hearty meal. Bring a main entrée, salad, appetizer or dessert to share.

Battle Ground Community Center lunches

Seniors 60 and over are invited to join on weekdays for a hot and nutritious lunch at the Battle Ground Community Center, 912 E Main St. Typically there are two entrees offered each day. A monthly newsletter, which includes a complete menu, is available at the community center or can be viewed online at mealsonwheels

Holiday closures: Please note that the senior lunch will not be available Monday, Feb. 19 in observance of President’s Day.

What to play

Pinochle

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays (weekly)

Time: Noon to 4 p.m.

Location: Battle Ground Senior Center, 116 NE 3rd Ave.

Cost: Nominal fee per game

Are you a Pinochle card player? If yes, then join for either single deck or double deck games. Having a partner is not a requirement to play. Potluck served at noon prior to game so bring a dish to share with the group. 

Bunco

Date: Third Friday of each month

Time: 1-3 p.m.



Location: Battle Ground Senior Center, 116 NE 3rd Ave.

Cost: $5 per person, per day

Roll the dice and play Bunco, a fun and fast-paced game. Anyone can play — no previous game experience or partner required.

Stay fit and healthy

Senior Enhanced Fitness Program

Battle Ground’s Senior Enhanced Fitness Program is a popular exercise program designed to help seniors meet fitness goals. This course is a group program for people 60 years of age and above and is focused on improving balance, flexibility, bone density, endurance, coordination and mental sharpness while decreasing the risk of falling.

Days: Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays

Times: 8:30-9:30 a.m. or 9:45-10:45 a.m.

Location: Battle Ground Community Center

Fee: $1 per person, per day; pre-registration not required 

DOGPAW

Even though winter is here, seniors’ four-legged friends still need to get out and play — now is the time to visit and support your local dog park.

DOGPAW is a Southwest Washington all-volunteer nonprofit organization that builds, maintains, and manages four DOGPAW dog parks in Clark County. They are solely funded by community donations to provide safe off-leash dog parks. Currently DOGPAW offers four local dog parks in Clark County: 

Lucky Dog Park 

10100 NE 149th St, Brush Prairie, east of state Route 503

Kane Dog Park 

Located at Hockinson Meadow Community Park, 10910 NE 172nd Ave., Vancouver

Dakota Dog Park 

Located at Pacific Park 1515 NE 164th Ave., Vancouver

Ross Dog Park 

5167 NE 15th Ave., Vancouver

Medicare Health Plan Seminars

Kaiser Permanente will be providing several Medicare health plan information seminars at the Battle Ground Community Center this winter to give seniors a chance to learn more about healthcare options that are available.
