La Center Middle School’s students completed fundraising for Doernbecher Children's Hospital with extraordinary success. In the 12th year of doing this the goal of $7,000 has already been reached with more than $11,000 raised in five days by students with donations continuing to come in.

To raise the money, students took part in a copper/silver superteam competition, which had homerooms competing against one another to fill jugs with silver and cash and also their own individual jugs with pennies. Paper Doernbecher dollies and Sadie and Josie cookies were also sold.

Raising money for “Kids Making Miracles for Doernbecher Children's Hospital” began when Janice Broten, an English and leadership teacher at the school, asked her ASB students how they would make a positive impact on our world.

“One of my students, Brian Helmold, wanted to do something for Doernbechers because the hospital had helped his sister, Ashley,” said Broten. “The fundraising began that year and continues to surpass expectations with more than $70,000 being donated over 12 years.”

Because of their effort to make the world a better place, Battle Ground Red Robin has offered to treat four students: Lauren Fox, Braiden Wrigley, Eva Dawson and Katie Steward, to lunch this week. They each brought in over $1,000.

“This year we set an amazing record with our total because of the individual fundraising efforts of all of our students,” said Broten. “I'm blessed to walk the halls with so many giving, kind-hearted teenagers.”
